History of Dunavățu de Jos

The name “Dunavățu de Jos” comes from the Slavic language, in which the word “Dunaveț” means “Little Danube” and is closely related to the gorge that connects the St. George arm of the Danube and the Razim-Sinoe lagoon complex.

The settlement has been mentioned since ancient times due to its strategic position and the natural riches of the Danube Delta.

Dunavățu de Jos is a fishing village which belongs to the commune of Murighiol and benefits from the advantage of easy access via the highway that connects it to the city of Tulcea.

Since July 16, 1973, the village of Murighiol, along with 13 other localities, was declared, experimentally, a ‘tourist village’. The name “Murighiol” comes from Turkish and means “lake of ants”. The main economic activities in the area include fishing, tourism, agritourism, agriculture and trade.

A defining element for this commune is the Dunavăț Arm, a navigable waterway, frequently used by a variety of boats – from small local boats to modern tourist vessels.

It plays an important role in the Delta’s hydrographic network, connecting the two major branches of the Danube, Sfântu Gheorghe and Sulina. This connection benefits both tourists keen to explore the Delta and locals who depend on water transportation.

In 1991, the Danube Delta became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is classified as a biosphere reserve at national level and as a national park in the IUCN international taxonomy, being one of the best preserved European deltas with a remarkable natural heritage.
