Sulina – a port with history

Portul din Sulina

Port of Sulina

Sulina, or old Porto-Franco, has a rich history of adventurers, pirates and gold workers. During capitalism, the port was a symbol of prosperity, but its development was halted during the communist regime.

In the early 1900s, Sulina was considered the most important port on the Black Sea, and in its heyday it was home to 8 consular offices and dozens of shipping companies. At the time, the city’s infrastructure was impressive and included:

  • two modern hospitals;
  • telegraph system and water supply;
  • street lighting;
  • Various educational institutions: 2 Romanian schools, 2 Greek schools, a German school, a Turkish school and a French boarding school;
  • English Marine Institute, theater, three printing presses and three local newspapers;
  • two cinemas and a casino.

Sulina had become a meeting point for sailors, merchants and businessmen from all over the world, facilitating trade and cultural exchanges.

Sulina beach – particularities and curiosities

Sulina Beach

Sulina Beach is about 5 kilometers long and has an average width of 30 meters. One of the elements that give the beach its special charm is the fine texture of the sand all along the beach.

In addition, the sea water is extremely clear and shallow even for considerable distances out to sea, making it perfect for families with children, giving them a safe place to play and swim. This relaxing, tranquil and safe landscape is complemented by the lack of seaweed and high waves.

An additional safety feature is the sandbanks that form at regular intervals of 30 meters. These areas prevent little ones from venturing into deeper areas, allowing them to have fun in the shallows. Parents can rest easy knowing that the environment is suitable for play.
